4 QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO ASK BEFORE MAKING
ANY FINANCIAL DECISION
I've made financial decisions I deeply regret. Not because I was stupid — because I was rushed, emotional, or trusting the wrong people. Every one of those decisions could have been avoided if I had stopped and asked four simple questions first.
I ask these questions now before every single financial move I make. And I teach every client to do the same.
Question 1 — Can I afford to lose this?
Not can you afford to buy it. Can you afford to lose it entirely.
Whether it's an investment, a business decision, or a major purchase — if losing it completely would devastate you financially, you're not in a position to do it yet. Period.
Question 2 — Do I fully understand what I'm getting into?
If you can't explain it clearly to someone else in plain English — you don't understand it well enough to put your money into it.
This question has saved me from more bad decisions than anything else. If the answer is no — research it until the answer is yes. Or walk away.
Question 3 — Who benefits if I say yes?
Follow the money. Always.
When someone is pushing you toward a financial decision — ask yourself who profits if you agree. A salesperson. A broker. A family member. Understanding who benefits from your yes helps you evaluate whether the advice is genuinely in your interest or theirs.
Question 4 — What does this look like in 12 months?
Not today. Not next week. 12 months from now.
Will this decision put you in a better or worse position a year from today? Most bad financial decisions look fine in the moment and terrible a year later. Most good ones require short term discomfort for long term stability.
Four questions. Ask every time. Without exception.
